What is Electronic Product Code(EPC)?

what is electronic product code

Electronic Product Codes give each physical object in the world a unique identifier that stands out from all other objects, forever. These codes provide an invaluable way to track and differentiate between items of every kind!

How Does Electronic Product Code Work?

Electronic Product Code (EPC) is a type of barcode that stores data about individual items in the supply chain. Its structure consists of an 18-bit Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) and an additional 14-bits containing unique product identifiers, such as serial numbers or lot identifiers.

When scanned, RFID readers extract the information from the EPC code and store it in a database. This data can then be used to track items throughout its journey—from production to delivery. The information stored in the tag can also be used for inventory management and customer support purposes, such as providing detailed product descriptions or specifications when requested by customers.

In addition, EPC technology allows manufacturers to remotely monitor the condition of the items during transit times, ensuring greater control over their shipments.

EPC’s Basic Format

Item Introduction
Header Identifies the length, type, structure, version, and generation of the EPC
EPC Manager Number Entity responsible for maintaining the subsequent partitions
Object Class Identifies a class of objects
Serial Number Identifies the instance
basic format of epc

How EPC is applied to RFID tags

EPC consists of a unique serial number, making it possible to track each item from the time it leaves the supplier to when it reaches the consumer. EPC codes are typically encoded in RFID tags, but can also be printed on labels or tags.

When an EPC tag is scanned, the reader extracts all of the information stored in the code, such as origin and destination points, product type, size, weight and price. This data can then be used to manage inventory levels and optimize business processes throughout the supply chain.

Why is EPC technology important?

Electronic Product Code (EPC) technology is an essential tool for managing the vast and often complex supply chains of today’s businesses. It plays a crucial role in the efficient tracking and identification of items, allowing companies to accurately monitor their products throughout the entire lifecycle.

Furthermore, EPC technology helps to streamline operations by providing useful data about product types, origin or destination points, as well as pricing information. This data is invaluable when it comes to making informed decisions regarding inventory management or customer support—allowing businesses to optimize business processes and reduce costs associated with lost or damaged goods.

Other useful information in RFID chips

RFID chips are revolutionizing supply chain traceability by providing real-time visibility and an abundance of data. Each chip contains a TID number, EAN or GTIN code for product identification and packaging, as well as SSCC numbers to identify pallets in logistics operations.

Furthermore, with the addition of sector-specific information such as dates of preferential consumption & production batch plus anti-theft alarms on products intended for final consumers; RFID technology proves its expertise when it comes to tracking goods across industries!
